I am fond of the term "romantic reversal" because it's antiquated and overly James-ian (Whartonian?), so as a result it takes people a few moments to register the events actually referenced and then chuckle (hopefully) at how clever I am, which buys me valuable time to either distract them with another topic, or gather the emotional wherewithal to minimize/humorize the situation.
